The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy Expands Opportunities for Teachers to Attend the 2009 Program
Send My Teacher!
The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy has announced additional opportunities for teachers to be considered to attend the 2009 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy, a week-long, all-expense paid, math and science professional development program for third- through fifth-grade teachers.

The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy recently launched sendmyteacher.com, an interactive Web site that allows students to nominate their teacher to be one of the 100 teachers who will be selected for trip to next year’s math and science professional development program. Students can send their teachers an electronic note or print out a certificate to encourage them to apply for the program. Teachers are also able to self nominate for consideration.

“Since the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy was launched in 2004, we have received an overwhelmingly positive response from the education community, and we have been proud to expand the program from one annual program to three Academies serving more than 600 teachers each year,” said Rex Tillerson, chairman of the Exxon Mobil Corporation. “With the launch of sendmyteacher.com, we are further expanding the opportunity for teachers from across the country to attend a program that helps bolster their teaching skills in math and science and helps them motivate their students to pursue careers in these fields.”

Developed in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions, the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is designed to give teachers the opportunity to hone their science and math teaching skills, enhance their curricula and discover innovative new ways to inspire their students. The 100 teachers selected from the review process will spend five days next July in Jersey City, New Jersey, deepening their understanding of mathematics and science content, building expertise in facilitating student learning through problem solving and inquiry, and using links between math and science that supports student learning and understanding in the classroom.

“Our goal with the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is to equip teachers with the skills and tools they need to inspire their students in math and science,” said Phil Mickelson. “Amy and I are excited to expand the opportunity for more teachers to attend the Academy and help reignite these teachers’ own passion for these subjects.”

Traditionally, the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy works with superintendents in communities where Phil Mickelson plays on the PGA TOUR or where ExxonMobil has operations. With the launch of sendmyteacher.com, third- through fifth-grade teachers from accredited schools in every community across the United States are eligible for consideration.

Teacher applications are due by October 31, 2008. At that time, the National Science Teachers Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics will convene a panel of math and science experts to evaluate the entries and select the 100 teachers who will attend the 2009 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. Selections will be announced in February 2009.

In 2008, the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy will host more than 600 teachers in Houston, Texas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Jersey City, New Jersey. To date, close to 1000 teachers have already attended the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy.
